Outlet and GFCI replacement in Louisville with The Tenant Turn means taking out a bad outlet, switch or GFCI and putting in a new one on the same wiring. The price is set by the job and quoted free, usually the same day. New wiring, new circuits, extra outlets and panel work belong to an electrician, and we will tell you when that is what the problem is.

What our outlet and GFCI replacement covers

  • Replacing a loose, worn, cracked or dead outlet
  • Replacing a failed or tripping GFCI outlet
  • Replacing a light switch or dimmer
  • Swapping in tamper-resistant outlets for rentals
  • Replacing cracked, yellowed or missing cover plates
  • GFCI outlets in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and outdoors, where one is already wired

How we replace an outlet or GFCI

We shut off the breaker for the circuit and test the outlet with a meter to confirm the power is off. Then we take out the old device, check the wires and the box behind it, and connect the new one the same way. The outlet is screwed back in, the cover plate goes on, the power comes back, and we test it, including the test and reset buttons on a GFCI.

If you do this yourself, shut off the breaker first and test that the power is off. A breaker labeled wrong is common, so check with a tester before you touch a wire.

When a GFCI outlet is the answer

A GFCI outlet cuts the power fast if it senses current going the wrong way, which is why code calls for them near water: bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements and outdoors. They wear out. If yours will not reset, will not hold power, or the test button does nothing, it needs replacing. One GFCI can also protect other outlets down the line, so when a dead outlet in the garage turns out to be a tripped GFCI in the bathroom, we find it.

We replace a GFCI with a GFCI on the same wiring. Adding GFCI protection where there is none, on a circuit that was not wired for it, is for an electrician to look at.

What we do not do, and who to call

We replace devices. We do not run new wire, add a circuit, add outlets, work in the panel, or chase down why a breaker keeps tripping. We do not touch aluminum wiring, and we do not touch an outlet that is scorched, melted or hot. Those are electrician jobs, and some are safety problems. If we open a box and find any of it, we stop and tell you who to call.

What outlet and GFCI replacement costs in Louisville

We price it by the job. What decides it is how many devices need replacing, what type they are, and how easy the boxes are to get to. One outlet is quick. A whole unit of worn outlets and switches is a bigger visit, and we quote it all together.

The quote is free, usually the same day. Tell us what is wrong with each one, and we can say what to expect before we book.

How to get a quote with a photo

Send a photo of the outlet or the switch, and one of the room. Tell us what it does: dead, loose, sparking, tripping, or just cracked. Text it to (502) 678-9060. If it sparks, smells burnt or is hot, leave the breaker off and tell us, and we will tell you whether to call an electrician first.

Outlets and GFCIs for landlords and rentals

Dead, loose and cracked outlets are among the most common tenant complaints, and a missing cover plate looks bad on a walkthrough. We replace outlets, switches and covers between tenants as part of a rental turnover, and we can install tamper-resistant outlets, which new construction uses and which are a good choice where children live. We check the GFCIs and replace the ones that fail the test button.

Outlet and GFCI replacement around Louisville

Older houses in Germantown and Schnitzelburg, the Highlands and Jeffersontown often have worn outlets that no longer grip a plug, and the condos and newer homes around Hurstbourne have their own tripping GFCIs. We also work in Crescent Hill, St. Matthews and Shively. See the full list of areas we serve. Everything we do is part of one Louisville handyman service.

Our 30-day guarantee on outlet and GFCI replacement

Outlet work carries a 30-day guarantee, and we test every device with you before we leave. If a device we installed fails or comes loose in that time because of our work, call us and we come back and fix it. Problems in the house wiring, a breaker that trips, and a device that was already damaged by a surge are not covered.

What outlet and GFCI replacement doesn't include

  • New wiring, new circuits or extra outlets (an electrician's job)
  • Breaker panel work, or a breaker that keeps tripping
  • Aluminum wiring, or old or damaged wiring we find behind the device
  • Any outlet that is burned, melted or hot to the touch

Those need a specialist. We will tell you when a job is one of them and point you to someone good.

Outlet and GFCI replacement questions

Can a handyman replace an outlet?

Yes, when it is a like-for-like swap on existing wiring that is in good shape. New wiring, extra outlets and panel work are for an electrician.

How do I know if my outlet needs to be replaced?

Replace it if it is loose in the wall, will not hold a plug, is cracked, is dead, or has scorch marks. If it is hot, smells burnt or sparks, shut the breaker off and have it looked at before using it again.

Why will my GFCI outlet not reset?

It may have failed, or it may be tripping because of a fault on the circuit or water in a connected outlet. If a new GFCI also will not reset, the problem is in the wiring and needs an electrician.

Where do I need a GFCI outlet?

Near water: bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, laundry areas and outdoors. We replace the ones that are already wired for it.

What are tamper-resistant outlets?

They have shutters that block anything except a plug. Many rentals use them, and we can install them in place of old outlets.

Do I need to turn off the power first?

Always. Shut off the breaker and test that the outlet is dead with a tester before touching the wires.

Can you add more outlets?

No. Adding an outlet means running new wiring, which is an electrician's job.

What if the breaker keeps tripping?

That is a problem with the circuit or something plugged into it, not a bad outlet. We do not chase it, and we will tell you to call an electrician.
