What door repair costs in Louisville

We charge $75 an hour with a 2-hour minimum. Almost every sticking door, latch that misses or hinge that squeaks is fixed inside that minimum, so you pay $150 and the door works again. Doors on the same visit go faster, so bring us the whole list.

Drafts are a fall job. Fresh weatherstripping and a door sweep on your front or back door is $150 for the first door and about $40 to $75 for each additional door, plus the parts. Installing a storm door you picked up at Lowe's or Home Depot is $225 to $300 in labor, three to four hours.

Angi puts the average Louisville door repair around $250. Most of ours finish under that because we fix the door you have instead of selling you a new one.

Why your door sticks or won't latch

Houses in Louisville swell in the humid summer and shrink in the dry, heated winter, and the doors move with them. A door that rubs the top of the frame in August often has a hinge screw that has let go, not a door that is too big. A latch that misses the strike by a hair has usually dropped a quarter inch over the years.

We start with the cheap fixes: longer hinge screws into the framing, a shimmed hinge, a moved strike plate. Only when those are not enough do we plane the door. That is why most of these are done inside the minimum.

  • Tighten and replace hinge screws into the framing
  • Shim or reset hinges to square the door
  • Move or file the strike plate
  • Plane the edge only when the door really is tight
  • Adjust the threshold and sweep so the door seals without dragging

Drafty doors, weatherstripping and storm doors

If you can see daylight around your door, you are paying to heat the yard. New compression weatherstripping around the frame and a sweep at the bottom close those gaps for less than one winter's worth of the leak. We also adjust the threshold so the sweep seals without the door dragging.

A storm door adds a second seal and keeps the rain off your entry door. Bring one home in the right size and we hang it, set the closer and align the latch so it shuts softly instead of slamming.

Hardware, locks and turnovers

New knobs, levers and deadbolts go on in minutes and make an old door feel new. For landlords we swap or rekey locks between tenants, replace missing door stops and strikes, and photograph everything for the file. Door and hardware work folds neatly into an Express or Standard turnover.

Garage doors: who to call instead

We don't repair garage doors or openers. The springs are under heavy tension and that is specialist work. Call a garage door company for those. Everything else on this page, from the front door to the closet doors, is ours.

What this doesn't cover

  • Garage doors and openers (garage door company)
  • Full exterior door and frame replacement with new sidelights (quoted separately, often a door contractor)
  • Electronic lock wiring beyond battery smart locks

Those need a licensed trade. We will tell you when a job is one of them and point you to someone good.

Questions

Why is my door sticking or rubbing the frame?

Usually a hinge has loosened and the door has dropped, or the house has swelled with summer humidity. We reset the hinges with longer screws and shim them square. Planing the door is the last resort, not the first.

Why won't my door latch or close all the way?

The latch is missing the strike plate, typically because the door sagged a little over the years or the frame moved. Moving or filing the strike, or resetting a hinge, fixes it in under an hour.

How much does door repair cost in Louisville?

The Tenant Turn charges $75 an hour with a 2-hour minimum. Most sticking, latch and hinge repairs finish inside that minimum, about $150. Storm door installs run $225 to $300 in labor.

How do I fix a drafty exterior door, and what does weatherstripping cost?

New compression weatherstripping around the frame plus a door sweep at the bottom. We charge $150 for the first exterior door and about $40 to $75 for each additional door on the same visit, plus parts.

Can you install a storm door I bought at Lowe's or Home Depot?

Yes. Bring it home in the right size and we hang it, set the closer and align the latch. Labor is $225 to $300, about three to four hours.

Can a door jamb or frame be repaired after a break-in?

Usually, yes. We rebuild the split jamb, reinforce the strike area with a steel plate and long screws, and rehang the door. Send a photo and we quote it flat.

Do you repair sliding patio doors and screen doors?

Yes. Rollers, tracks, handles and screens on sliding doors, and hinges, closers and screens on storm and screen doors.

Can you replace door knobs, deadbolts and hinges?

Yes, and for landlords we swap or rekey locks between tenants. Bring the hardware you like or we pick it up at cost plus 10%.

Can you hang a new interior door in an existing frame?

Yes. A slab door hung in your existing frame is $150 to $225 in labor. Prehung doors, where the frame changes too, are quoted from a photo.

Should I repair or replace my door?

Repair, almost always. A door that sticks, sags or drafts is a hardware and adjustment problem. Replace when the door itself is rotted, cracked through or badly warped. We tell you straight which one you have.

Do you fix garage doors?

No. Garage doors and openers need a garage door company because of the spring tension. We handle every other door in the house.

How long does a door repair take?

About an hour per door for sticking and latch fixes, one to two hours for weatherstripping, and three to four hours for a storm door install.
