Ceiling fan with a light installed in a bright rental room

Replacing an existing light fixture with a new one on the same wiring is routine handyman work, and The Tenant Turn does it for homes and rentals in Louisville. The price is set by the job and quoted free, usually the same day. New wiring, a new circuit, moving a box or adding a light where there was none is an electrician's job, and we will tell you when that is what you need.

What our light fixture installation covers

  • Replacing a ceiling light with a new fixture
  • Replacing bathroom vanity lights
  • Hanging pendants and chandeliers on an existing box
  • Replacing outdoor porch and entry lights
  • Swapping a light switch or dimmer for a new one on the existing wiring
  • Assembling the fixture and hauling away the old one

How we install a light fixture

We shut off the breaker for the room and check that the power is really off before we touch anything. We take down the old fixture, look at the box and the wiring behind it, and match the wires to the new fixture: hot to hot, neutral to neutral, ground to ground. The fixture is mounted to the box, the shade or bulbs go on, and we turn the power back on and test it.

The fixture has to fit the box. A heavy chandelier needs a box rated to hold it, and if the box is not up to it, we say so before we hang it.

Do you need an electrician to install a light fixture?

Not for a swap. Taking an old fixture off and putting a new one on, on wiring that is already there and working, is routine handyman work. You need an electrician when the job is new wiring: a new circuit, a light in a spot that has no wiring, a moved box, or wiring that is old, brittle, or scorched.

We tell you which one it is. If we open a box and find something wrong, such as cloth-covered wire, aluminum wiring, or burn marks, we stop and tell you to call an electrician. We would rather lose the job than do it wrong.

What light fixture installation costs in Louisville

We price it by the job. What decides it is how many fixtures there are, what type they are, and how hard they are to reach. A plain flush-mount light is quick. A heavy pendant, a high ceiling that needs a tall ladder, or a vanity light that has to be lined up with the mirror takes longer.

You can supply the fixture or we can pick it up. The quote is free, usually the same day.

How to get a quote with a photo

Send a photo of the old fixture and one of the room, with the ceiling height. Tell us how many fixtures you have and whether you already bought the new ones. Text it to (502) 678-9060 and we will tell you what to expect before we book.

Light fixture installation for landlords and rentals

Outdated, broken or missing fixtures make a unit look dated, and a dark hallway or porch is a safety complaint waiting to happen. We replace fixtures between tenants as part of a rental turnover, along with paint and small repairs. For switches and receptacles, see our page on outlet and GFCI replacement.

Light fixture installation around Louisville

We install and replace fixtures in older homes in Germantown and Schnitzelburg, the Highlands and Jeffersontown, and in the newer houses and condos around Hurstbourne. We also work in Crescent Hill, St. Matthews and Shively. See the full list of areas we serve. Everything we do is part of one Louisville handyman service.

Our 30-day guarantee on light fixture installation

Fixture work carries a 30-day guarantee, and we test every light with you before we leave. If a fixture we installed flickers, comes loose or stops working in that time because of our work, call us and we come back and fix it. A bulb that burns out, a fixture that was already faulty, and problems in the house wiring are not covered.

What light fixture installation doesn't include

  • Running new wiring or adding a new circuit
  • Moving a light to a new spot, or adding a light where there was none
  • Replacing or adding a junction box that is damaged or missing
  • Old or damaged wiring, aluminum wiring, or a breaker that keeps tripping (an electrician's job)

Those need a specialist. We will tell you when a job is one of them and point you to someone good.

Light fixture installation questions

How much should I pay to have a light fixture installed?

It depends on the fixture and the job. A simple swap on existing wiring is quick, and a heavy pendant or a high ceiling takes longer. We quote by the job, free, usually the same day, so send a photo.

Who do I call to install a light fixture?

For a like-for-like swap, a handyman. For new wiring, a new circuit or a light where none existed, an electrician. We do the swaps and tell you when it is an electrician's job.

Do I need an electrician to install a light fixture?

Not to replace an existing one on working wiring. You need an electrician for new wiring, a moved box, a new circuit, or wiring that is damaged or very old.

Can you replace a bathroom vanity light?

Yes. We take the old one down, hang the new one and line it up with the mirror. If the wall needs a small patch afterward, we can do that too.

Can you install an outdoor porch light?

Yes, as a replacement for an existing porch light on the same wiring. We seal around it so water stays out of the box.

Can you hang a chandelier or heavy pendant?

Yes, if the box can carry the weight. We check the box first and tell you if it needs to be replaced by an electrician.

Do you install ceiling fans?

Yes, on an existing fan-rated box. A fan needs a box rated for it, and we check that first.

Can you add a new light where there is no wiring?

No. That means running new wire, which is an electrician's job.
